An electrolyte overview
Electrolytes must be in balance in the human body for normal cellular and organ function. Three major positively charged electrolytes are sodium, potassium, and magnesium.
Sodium and potassium balancing
Sodium is one of the most important electrolytes, being the ion found in the fluid outside of the cell. Most people get plenty of sodium in the diet, which is important for maintaining the proper amount of water in the body. However, too much sodium is associated with high blood volume, which increases blood pressure levels, so we make it a point not to include it in this formula.
Balancing sodium intake with potassium is critical because it is the main electrolyte found inside the fluid of the cells. Recommended daily intake for potassium is quite high (3,500 mg), and often difficult to obtain.
Depletion of electrolytes
Electrolytes can be depleted from the body by a variety of causes including excessive sweating from exercise, diarrhea, vomiting, and medications, including cardiovascular medications like diuretics, certain antibiotics, gout drugs, antacids, and anti-inflammatories like prednisone and aspirin.
