#1: Eyedrate’s highly concentrated fish oil complex delivers research levels of omega-3s for essential eye functions

DHA is the predominant omega-3 in the retina, making up 30%–40% of the fatty acids found in the photoreceptors. Because these portions of the retina are constantly under stress, a regular supply of DHA is required for proper retinal function. Omega-3s also promote a normal inflammatory response, which leads to a healthy ocular tear film and a healthy ocular surface.

That’s why Eyedrate contains a fish oil complex containing the two beneficial omega-3 fatty acids—EPA and DHA. They can’t be synthesized in the human body but are critical for bodily functions, which is why supplementation is key.

Omega-3s support eye moisture and natural tear production

In a randomized, double blind study, 64 individuals were divided into two groups. For one month, one group consumed 360 mg EPA and 240 mg DHA per day (the amount in Eyedrate), while the other group received a placebo.

The results were nothing short of amazing: The individuals who consumed the EPA/DHA combination had a significantly better improvement in eye moisture—a 71% improvement compared to 3.3% for the placebo group.The mean TBUT (tear film break-up time) in the omega-3 group increased by approximately 1.7 seconds. That may not sound like a lot but when it comes to your eyes, it’s significant—and the longer your eyes stay moist, the more stable the tear film.

In a second test measuring tear production, the omega-3 group showed significant improvement over the placebo group—22.3% vs 5.1%.¹

#2: The "other" fatty acid: Omega-7 from sea buckthorn seed oil, revered since ancient times

Of all the omega fatty acids, it’s true that omega-3s usually get most of the attention. But omega-7s have their beneficial roles as well, particularly when it comes to heart health and eye support.

That’s why we were was so enthusiastic about sea buckthorn seed oil, which is pressed from the fruits and seeds of the bright orange sea buckthorn berry. Its use has been traced back to traditional Chinese medicine as early as the Tang Dynasty over 1,000 years ago, and its wide range of uses, recorded in literary works, as early as the 8th century, include eye hydration.

Sea buckthorn seed oil contains palmitoleic acid and antioxidants, and much more omega-7s than a typical dose of omega-7 from fish sources. Plus it’s a natural source of a full spectrum of additional antioxidants, vitamins and minerals lacking in marine-sourced products, including vitamins C and E, which may support eye health.

#3: Super nutrient astaxanthin: A unique and highly potent carotenoid and antioxidant

Of all the carotenoids, astaxanthin is one of only three that can cross the blood-retinal barrier. In other words, due to its unique cell membrane, astaxanthin easily enters the tissues of the eyes so it can exert its positive effects where it’s needed most. This makes it a highly effective antioxidant for eye support as well as brain health.

Compared to other carotenoids, astaxanthin’s free radical scavenging activity is far more potent.² In fact, astaxanthin has been found to have a higher antioxidant capacity than zeaxanthin, lutein, canthaxanthin, beta-carotene, and alpha tocopherol.³

Astaxanthin helps protect the mitochondria against free radicals, conserving their antioxidant capacity and enhancing their efficiency in producing energy.⁴ It also increases mitochondrial activity in the retinal cells by increasing oxygen consumption while controlling oxidative stress.⁵

Specifically related to vision, this red, fat-soluble pigment concentrates in the iris-ciliary muscle of the eye, helping the eyes shift focus from close up to long distance. And like EPA and DHA, astaxanthin cannot be synthesized by the body, thus it must be obtained from diet or supplementation.
